Benefits of Canine Swimming
Swimming improves cardiovascular and stamina, and at the same time
dogs avoid high-impact damage to joints, ligaments and tendons. It
can also increase your dog's heart rate, increasing blood flow, and
improving lung capacity, without the damage a hard run on land would
do.
The best
benefit of swimming
is you can have graduated exercise that is non weightbearing. Even
resisted exercises are non-weightbearing so that they can maintain
or increase muscles strength without causing further injury to
damaged bones and/or joints."
It
will benefit:
-
Pre and post operative dogs.
-
Disabled dogs or dogs with poor mobility.
-
Overweight dogs.
-
Racing, working and show dogs for muscle tone and
building stamina for agility and fitness.
-
Senior dogs.
-
Dogs who are convalescing (e.g. after spaying or
caesarean section).
We all know that diet and exercise is the key to healthy living - we
need to do the same for our dogs. The
normal exercising of overweight dogs on footpaths or hard ground,
can lead to lameness and discomfort. When dogs are swimming they are
working harder as the density of water is greater than air. Swimming
for ten minutes is equivalent to a five mile walk. Swimming
is an excellent aerobic exercise that is safe for their joints and
burn calories; together with a good diet you can ensure the optimum
weight for your dog.
Working, racing and show dogs will find swimming exercises
invaluable, it will keep them in top physical condition,
strengthening and maintaining muscles, which will guard against
other possible injuries. Preventative care is always recommended.
Senior dogs can comfortably exercise arthritic joints and maintain a
healthy body weight. It is an effective media for conditioning and
toning seniors.
Convalescing dogs can carefully exercise back to full fitness. The
water buoyancy removes potential stresses and loads on the joints
and allows the dog to build up its strength with minimal risk of
further injury.
